Gallstones are relatively common in the general population, and many people may not even know they have them. However, while taking GLP-1 medications such as Mounjaro or Wegovy, there is a small chance of developing gallstones or gallbladder inflammation (cholecystitis)—particularly if weight loss is quick (more than about 1.5 kg per week).
Although this is uncommon, it’s important to know the signs and seek prompt medical attention if symptoms occur.
🔍 Recognising the Signs
- Right-sided abdominal pain – especially under the ribs, which may indicate gallstones or gallbladder inflammation.
- Severe or persistent pain – often accompanied by nausea, vomiting, or fever.
- Feeling generally unwell – symptoms of cholecystitis can worsen quickly and require medical assessment.
🚨 What to Do If You Suspect Gallbladder Issues
- Seek immediate help: If you develop intense or persistent right-sided pain, especially under the ribs, contact NHS 111 or visit A&E.
- Stop and consult: If you experience vomiting, fever, or severe discomfort, stop your medication and seek urgent medical advice.
✅ Prevention & Monitoring
- Avoid rapid weight loss: Losing weight too quickly may increase gallstone risk. Aim for a steady, sustainable pace by eating small, balanced meals.
- Stay hydrated: Drinking enough fluids helps dilute bile and can reduce the likelihood of gallstone formation.
- Monitor symptoms: Keep track of new or worsening digestive symptoms and contact your NHS GP or our clinical team if concerned.
If you suspect gallbladder issues or have any concerns about gallstones while taking GLP-1 medication, seek medical attention without delay. Early intervention can prevent complications.
